For my final project at univeristy I went to Finland and carried out a project looking at 'FDH' Finnish Disease Heritage.

Finnish Disease Heritage is the name given to a group of 50 hereditary diseases that are most commonly found in people of Finnish descent. These diseases have developed over many generations due to genetic isolation, which has resulted in the founder effect, and genetic drift. This has caused genetic mutations leading to the reoccurence of these diseases within the Finnish population.

This project looks at the scientific research that has gone into discovering the diseases involved in FDH, and the Finnish landscape which is directly related to the development of FDH. The images of the research facilities allow an insight into the work that is being carried out, and the environment in which the diseases are researched. The landscape images show the environment which made migration across the country difficult therefore leading to the genetic pools which allowed FDH to develop. Both sets of images have the same stark and clinical feel to them, with the isolation and repetative nature of Finnish Disease Heritage being mirrored in the photographs.

Here are a few images from the series, I am currently in the process of finnishing off the project, the full series will be up sometime in the coming month.
